My name is Lauren Gunderson and I've been writing for the theatre since I was 16. Noticed for my interpretation of science and history onstage, I'm glad to have this space to share my work and my inspiration with you.

HEART.BEAT.

A young woman realizes her own stregnth to change her life while her abusive husband is in Iraq. Commissioned by Dad's Garage Theatre for their 8 1/2 x 11 Festival 2006.

CHARACTER:

SHE - 25-30, fit. Dressed in running shorts and sports bra.

A street, now

LAST TAPE

Drama. 10 minutes. 1w. Good for colleges and some high schools +

A lone woman confronts herself with a sobering realization about her life in this subtle omage to Beckett. As she begins half of a conversation ew realize she is recording herself onto a tape. Half-way through the play, the tape recording becomes the only relationship outlet she has, and must confess her news and circumstance: the cancer may not be gone after all.

Characters:

A woman – the first time she is young and naive, the second time weathered but not bitter.
Her voice played back on tape – the woman as played the first time

Setting:

A room with a table, chair, and tape recorder.

LOS HUEVOS

Drama. 10 minutes. 2w, 1m 

3 siblings recount the culinary adventures while making dinner for their parents anniversary. But is this a family celebration or a ritual of remeberence?

Characters: 

MARTHA: The youngest. 11 years old. Creative.
LAURA: The middle child, 16. Confidant.
ERIC: The oldest, 20. Content.
 

Setting:

Some version of a kitchen.

MASS

A one-woman play exploring Lieserl, the true lost daughter of Einstein. Using relativity, the play presents a young woman searching for her father through space, time, and the history of science.

Character:

Lieserl – age 18, dark, serious girl. Dressed for today’s weather, but her clothes are dark and reminiscent of late 19th century style.

Setting:

Today, somewhere nearby. A simple over-head projector nearby.

 Midnight Bull Fight 

Drama. 15-20 minutes. 2w, 3m. Great for schools

5 young Civil Rights freedom fighters are dropped in the middle of Tennessee after protesting the infamous "Bull" Conner in Alabama. Can they make it to sunrise, and alive?  Based on Rep. John Lewis’s autobiography, “Walking With the Wind.”

 

Characters:

School Girl: White, 10-16 years old

John: Black, 22-25

Bevel: Black, 22-25

Regge: Black, 22-25

Diane: Black, 22-25

Setting:

The middle of a smaller road, in a small southern town, 1961

Picks up where HAMLET leaves off, with Horatio ( one of the only friends left after the famous duel-poisoning). Can Horatio get Hamlet's story right? Or will the authorities paint Hamlet's friend as a co-conspirator.
 
Characters:

HORATIO: remaining witness, male or female

OFFICER: voice of an authority, offstage.
 

Setting:

A police station interrogation room. One chair, one table.

A suicide bomber and victim meet in the eerie in-between of life and death. Is forgiveness an option or another trick?

 

Characters: 

One - cocky,
Two - reserved but intense,

       ** Both written for female actors, but director should cast at will

A hilarious exploration of science's perspective on women as two radio technologists discover an alien signal that leads to progressively more 50's sci-fi mentality. Commissioned by Dad's Garage Theatre, for 8 1/2 x 11 Festival 2005.

Follows the lives (from birth to commitment) of two friends, as the turns of a long love play out in this quick, funny, honest play.
